1. Preface
Riverbank erosion is a natural process that occurs when the flow of water gradually wears away the soil and sediment along the river's edge. While this process is a natural part of the river's life cycle, it can have significant consequences for both the environment and human populations living in close proximity to rivers. Therefore, it becomes crucial to implement riverbank protection measures to mitigate erosion and preserve the stability of riverbanks.
There are various ways for riverbank protection, including installation sand bag, stone riprap, gabion box, retaining wall…. Among those methodologies, vinyl sheet piles has emerged as an innovative and sustainable solution for riverbank protection.
2. Utilization of vinyl sheet pile (VSP) for riverbank protection
Vinyl sheet piles act as an effective erosion control measure along riverbanks. It prevents soil erosion and sedimentation, thereby preserving the stability of river bank. The interlocking joints provide a secure barrier against water flow, reducing the risk of bank collapse and subsequent damage. To increase the height of retaining wall of vinyl sheet pile, the organization/individual can use the earth anchorage as the addition support for cantilevered sheet pile. The benefits of using vinyl sheet piles are listed below:
Cost Efficiency - both from installation and long term cost savings due to superior corrosion resistance, do not degrade over time, do not require regular maintenance or additional anti-corrosion treatments and lower price.
Environmental Sustainability: PVC is recyclable and has a lower carbon footprint during production compared to traditional materials such as steel or concrete. Its durability and resistance to corrosion result in reduced maintenance requirements, minimizing the impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
UV resistance - The PVC material is engineered with special compounds for resistance to harmful ultraviolet rays.
No rot and rust - Compared to wooden piles and steel sheet piles, vinyl sheet piles will not be rot and rust.
Lightweight and easy Installation - Compared to steel sheet piles, vinyl sheet piles can be up to 40 times lighter per square meter making it much easier to handle. Driving can also be completed under certain conditions by pressing down.
Durable 50+ year design life - Due to its superior corrosion resistance, Vinyl Sheet Piles can be installed with confidence in their structural integrity and appearance even after 50 years.
