MBBR Biofilter Media, or MBBR Media (or Pellet Biofilter Media), is a type of plastic material used for microorganisms to attach to. It is added to wastewater treatment systems, specifically to biological tanks, to enhance the treatment efficiency of these tanks and the entire system. Simply put, it serves as a habitat for microorganisms and is made from relatively durable plastic suitable for wastewater environments.

  • Operating Principle of MBBR Biofilter Media

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) biofilter media is directly added to biological tanks. The geometric structure and special surface of MBBR biofilter media create a large contact surface, serving as a safe and comfortable habitat for microorganisms to attach to. After a certain period, typically 25-30 days, a biofilm forms on the contact surface. This biofilm absorbs contaminants in the water as nutrients for microbial growth, leading to the development of various microbial species: aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic. During operation, these microorganisms continuously grow and increase in number, becoming more diverse, rejuvenating the biofilm in the tank, and effectively breaking down even hard-to-degrade substances.

Additionally, the use of cylindrical media creates an environment for the growth of various bacteria, including nitrifying bacteria, which helps to treat a large amount of organic matter and nitrogen in the wastewater. MBBR media is not only used in aerobic biological tanks but also in anoxic and anaerobic tanks for more effective nitrogen removal.

    Applications of MBBR Biofilter Media

MBBR biofilter media is used in the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater, including pharmaceuticals, electroplating, chemicals, printing, dyeing, metallurgy, food processing, etc. It is also used in fish pond filtration and aquaculture under the name Kaldnes filter media.

In wastewater treatment, to enhance treatment efficiency and increase system capacity without the need for construction or expansion, MBBR media is commonly added to biological treatment processes to increase the contact density between microorganisms and the media.

    Applications include:

    • Domestic wastewater treatment
    • Hospital wastewater treatment
    • Industrial wastewater treatment
    • Air treatment in "air filtration"
    • Can float in water when operating with aeration
    • Biological treatment in anaerobic tanks (UASB), aeration tanks, integrated treatment devices, etc.
    • Water filtration, water supply treatment
    • New technology applications
    • Aquaculture
